AreaderZ is a Safari web extension, so it needs Safari:

AreaderZ works in Safari rather than in Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Reading, summarizing and translating need no other software — except that the “local server” option requires Ollama or LM Studio running on a computer you own.

Apple Intelligence is the model Apple builds into the device, and Apple only offers it on certain hardware. If your Mac or iPhone is not on Apple's list of supported devices, the on-device option stays off, and no app can change that. On devices that are supported, it also has to be switched on:

1. On a Mac: System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. On iPhone: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
2. Turn Apple Intelligence on. The first time, the model is downloaded in the background — this can take a while over a slow connection.
3. Wait until it reports that it is ready, then close and reopen the AreaderZ pop-up.

If it still is not offered, use one of the other two options instead: a local server or your own API key. Both give you full summaries and translation.

Because that is the whole job. Reader view, summaries and translation all need to read the text of the page you are looking at. Safari requires every extension to ask for that access explicitly, and it will not let AreaderZ touch a page until you grant it.

What that permission does and does not mean:

• It is limited to the pages you grant it for. You can allow every website, or choose Ask and approve sites one by one. If you are cautious, Ask is a reasonable choice — you will be prompted the first time you use AreaderZ on a new site.
• It is processed on your device. The page text is read locally so it can be laid out in reader view, summarized or translated.
• It goes only where you told it to. With on-device AI, it goes nowhere. With a local server, it goes to your own machine. With your own API key, it goes to the provider you chose and to no one else. See the privacy policy for the full detail.
• We never see it. We do not collect browsing history or article content, and there is no AreaderZ server in the middle. Withdrawing the permission at any time takes effect immediately.

Note that Safari does not allow extensions to operate on some special pages, such as parts of the App Store or certain banking and system screens. That protection comes from Safari itself.

Open the article in AreaderZ, click the Settings gear in the reader controls (on iPhone it is the same gear in the extension sheet), then choose a theme. The seven options are:

• System — follows your device's light or dark setting automatically.
• Sepia — warm paper tones, gentle on the eyes.
• Typewriter — crisp black on white.
• Notation — quiet and book-like.
• Solarized — the well-known low-contrast palette.
• Charley — maximum contrast, for low vision or bright sunlight.
• Terminal — dark with monospaced text.

Most themes have both a light and a dark variant, and you can adjust text size and line width in the same panel. Your choice is remembered on that device. Themes are set per device, so set it once on each of your Mac and iPhone. A visual overview is on the home page.

Just switch it off (keeps your settings):

• Mac: Safari → Settings → Extensions, untick AreaderZ.
• iPhone: Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions → AreaderZ, turn the switch off.

Remove it completely:

• Mac: open Finder → Applications, drag AreaderZ to the Bin, then empty the Bin.
• iPhone: touch and hold the AreaderZ icon on the Home Screen, choose Remove App, then Delete App.

Deleting the app also deletes its settings, cached summaries and translations, and any stored API keys from that device. There is no copy held on our side — there is no account and no server, so there is nothing left to clean up. The user guide has the same steps with screenshots of where to tap.

Email hi@jeremyan.com. That address reaches the person who builds AreaderZ. Please include your device and version, which AI option you use, and a link to a page where it went wrong — it makes a fix far more likely.

If you think a summary or translation on a particular website is wrong, send the URL. Sites that serve article text in unusual ways are the most common cause, and reporting one usually gets it supported.

There is no subscription and no monthly quota, and no AreaderZ account is needed to use the app. AreaderZ Pro is a one-time purchase with a 7-day trial that never charges automatically — see Free and Pro for what it includes.

On the roadmap: pay-as-you-go credits. Buying credits would let you use AI capacity we host — handy if you would rather not run a local model or paste your own API key — with no subscription, and you would only pay for what you use. It is not in the app today, nothing is metered today, and the privacy policy already sets out exactly what such a feature would and would not collect before it ever ships.

If you use your own API key, you pay that provider directly for what you use, at their prices — AreaderZ adds no markup and takes no cut. If you use on-device AI or a local server, there is no ongoing cost beyond what you already pay for your device and electricity.

Keys are stored in the Apple Keychain on Apple platforms (or in local extension storage where the Keychain does not apply). They are not synced between devices and are never sent to us — we have no server to send them to.

Practically, that means you paste your key once on each device you use. It is a deliberate choice: it keeps the credential inside one device's secure storage rather than in a shared cloud record.

Yes, in the sense that matters most. With on-device Apple Intelligence, summaries and translations are produced with no internet connection at all, because the model is on your device. Recent summaries and translations are also cached locally, so revisiting a page is instant either way. Local server mode works without an internet connection too, as long as your own machine is reachable.

On privacy: no account, no analytics on your content, and we do not collect your browsing history, article content, or API keys. The only time content leaves your device is when you choose a third-party provider with your own key — and then it goes only to the provider you picked. Full detail in the privacy policy.

More than 20, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Turkish, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Greek, Hebrew, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Filipino.

The exact list available depends on the model you chose. Apple's on-device model covers a limited set of languages; a local or bring-your-own-key model generally covers more. Translation streams into the page as it is produced, so you can start reading immediately.

Work through these in order — they cover the overwhelming majority of reports:

1. Is the extension allowed on this site? Check Safari → Settings → Extensions → AreaderZ. If it is set to Ask, you must approve the site before AreaderZ will run on it.
2. Is the page an article at all? Checkout pages, dashboards, search results and home pages have no article to extract. Try a single news story or blog post.
3. Is your provider actually reachable? For a local server, confirm Ollama or LM Studio is running and that the port matches — http://localhost:11434/v1 for Ollama, http://localhost:1234/v1 for LM Studio.
4. Is your API key valid and funded? An expired key, a revoked key, or a provider account with no credit will fail every request.
5. Is a model selected for the task? Summaries and translations are chosen separately in settings; if no model is set for translation, translation will not run.

The floating AreaderZ button only appears on sites that are on your Allowed Sites list, so the usual reason it is missing is simply that the site has not been allowed yet. There are three ways to add one:

• From the extension pop-up: open the AreaderZ pop-up while you are on the site and click the blue Enable button on the “Get quick access with the AreaderZ button on this site” row.
• From Safari's Share menu: choose Share → AreaderZ, then Allow on the sheet titled “Add to AreaderZ?”.
• In the app: open AreaderZ, go to the Reader tab, and add the domain under Allowed Sites → Manage Allowed Sites.

Subdomains are included, so allowing example.com also covers news.example.com. If the site is already on the list and the button still does not show up, check that the extension itself is switched on and allowed to run there — Safari → Settings → Extensions → AreaderZ on a Mac, or Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions → AreaderZ on iPhone. Either way you can still use AreaderZ from the toolbar button, or from the extension button in Safari's address bar. The user guide walks through all of this.

Yes. The button follows the Allowed Sites list, so removing the site removes the button on its pages. You can do it in either place:

• In the app: open AreaderZ, go to the Reader tab, open Allowed Sites → Manage Allowed Sites, and remove the domain.
• From Safari's Share menu: on that site choose Share → AreaderZ. If the site is already allowed, the sheet says “AreaderZ quick access is on” and offers a Remove button.

Nothing else about the site changes — AreaderZ still works there from the Safari toolbar or the extension button in the address bar; it just stops adding its own floating button.

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are requested from Apple rather than from us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with the Apple Account you used, and select the purchase. If something about the app is broken, emailing hi@jeremyan.com first is usually faster — most problems have a solution.

AreaderZ works without paying anything. Pro is a one-time purchase after a 7-day free trial that never charges automatically — there is no subscription, and one purchase unlocks iPhone and Mac.

Pro adds: live translation of whole pages into more than 20 languages; short/medium/long summary lengths and custom instructions; several saved AI setups (so you can switch between on-device, a local server and your own key without re-entering anything); iCloud preference sync across your devices; PDF export; and removal of the “Created by AreaderZ” line on saved output. The Free version keeps the reader view itself — System theme, the default text size — and medium-length summaries.

No. There is no AreaderZ account and no sign-in for either version. The purchase is handled by Apple through your Apple Account, so AreaderZ never sees your payment details or your email address. API keys you enter stay in your device's Keychain and are never synced to us or to your other devices.
